PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Once again, weather played an important role for the F.A.F.H. in Colorado Springs the last week of August. The week started out very warm but with a threat of rain, moved on to a thunderstorm with lightning and a downpour that washed out the second tournament day. The third day was glorious sunshine with few clouds and a lovely breeze. Because of the washout at Arrowhead, the round at Bear Dance was changed to be low gross/low net scoring over 12 flights, doubling the planned payouts. We have good memories of the tournament days and extra activities.
The Cheyenne Mountain Resort was a nice home away from home. We enjoyed a fantastic Welcome Dinner buffet, tournament days breakfast buffets, and the Awards Banquet. Beautiful views from most every vantage point, especially the patio with the fireplace!!
Congratulations to all the winners, but standing out above all were the ‘Over the Field’ winners. For the Partner’s Day at the Country Club of Colorado, Gross winners were Linda Crass and Janis Turner, Net winners were Marian Duntley and Janet Herbold. Because of doubling payouts on the third day at Bear Dance, we awarded 2 sets of Over the Field. Second OTF winners were Donna Buxton (gross) and Julee Andrews (net), first and actual OTF winners were Liz Gnerre (gross) and Janet Herbold (net). Look for the listing of all winners on the website soon.
As always, one of the highlights was the announcement about the 2024 event. Lou Ann Reichling presented the dates of September 17 thru 24 for an outstanding week of fun at the luxurious Omni Barton Creek Resort in Austin, Texas. Further information will be available soon as it’s important to have 100 ladies excited to join the fun!
Thanks so much to all who joined me in Colorado!! Contact me, Susan Jett, here if you have any questions.

MONTHLY TOURNAMENTS
I am pleased to have received your positive feedback regarding the Closest to the Pin (CTP) competitions this year at our Association Day tournaments. In the seven months we’ve held this CTP competition, the WPLGA Board has observed wide ranges of payouts and flight sizes.
To bring more consistency across all divisions, we have voted to institute modifications to how CTP is being conducted. Payouts will be set at $6, and we will now include 2-4 flights depending on how many players are in the tournament. The result of these changes is that the payout for the day’s game will always be more than the CTP payout, and the flight sizes will be more consistent at a size averaging approximately 30 players. This change goes into effect with our next tournament on September 14.
We have experienced an increase in absences from Association Day tournaments. Often members depend on others in their foursome to provide notification to us at the course. Unfortunately, this information is not making it to the WPLGA representative, so I will ask you to notify your WPLGA Division Representative directly in the future. Contact information is included in our acceptance email as well as detailed emails from your Division Rep, so please make a note of whom to contact if you must cancel.
Last, I want to make you aware that Buenaventura in the Northern Division continues to recover from damage caused during our wet winter and will be unavailable to host our tournament in November. Please remember to check the website for updates. We will post information about the new venue for this tournament as soon as we know it.
The registration period for October Association Day is September 18-21 and the game will be Select Nine. You will select one Par 5, two Par 3s and six Par 4s minus half handicap. Please note that I will be traveling again, so Lou Ann Reichling will be collecting your registrations! Everything you need to know is on the Entry Form for the month. Thank you for doing such a good job last month; I’m sure you will do a perfect job again.
In the event you haven’t looked at the results for August’s tournament, they are on the main Monthly Tournaments page on the WPLGA website (wplga.net). Congratulations to the winners!
Thank you for your enthusiasm for WPLGA events. If you have feedback about how we can serve you better, please contact me, Donna Buxton, here.
RULES
In the USGA Rules of Golf book and on their website, there is a picture of a Teeing Area. Take a look at it to refresh your memory.
Rule 6.2b (6) When Ball in Play Lies in Teeing Area.
If the player’s ball in play is in the teeing area after a stroke (such as a teed ball after a stroke that missed the ball) or after taking relief, the player may:
• Lift or move the ball without penalty (see Rule 9.4b, Exception 1), and
• Play that ball or another ball from anywhere in the teeing area from a tee or the ground under (6.2b (2)), including playing the ball as it lies.
(Rule 9.4b, Exception 1 – Player Allowed to Lift or Move Ball:
There is no penalty when the player lifts the ball or causes it to move under a Rule that:
• Allows the ball to be lifted and then replaced on its original spot,
• Requires a moved ball to be replaced on its original spot, or
• Requires or allows the player to drop or place a ball again or to play a ball from a different place.)
You must count the stroke.
You are now hitting 2 IF your ball is in the Teeing Area.
This does not apply if you were taking a practice swing.
Download the USGA Rules of Golf app to your phone. You can find all of the answers to your rules questions there.
Contact Clarice Olive, Rules Chair, with any questions here.

2024 Team Play
We want to thank the 2023 Team Captains who offered some suggestions going forward with Team Play for 2024. We are happy to announce that you will be able to have 20 members on your rosters and we will try our best to get the courses scheduled as soon as possible after we get the divisions set up. Past captains will be getting information this month regarding registering your team. If you will not be the Captain in 2024 please pass to the appropriate person. The sooner you get us the information the sooner we can try scheduling matches. Janet Herbold, Karen Kiddy, Clarice Olive - 2024 Team Committee.
